The winner of the 2022 Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association’s Best Atlantic-Published Book Award, sponsored by Friesens Corporation, is Goose Lane Editions with The Rooms Corporation for Future Possible: An Art History of Newfoundland and Labrador, by Mireille Eagan.

Friesens Corporation sponsors the APMA Best Atlantic-Published Book Award with a cash prize of $3,000 awarded to the publisher and $1,000 to the author of the winning book. The prize is presented annually at the Atlantic Book Awards Gala to an Atlantic Canadian publisher whose book best exemplifies excellence in publishing. The jury considers content and editing, design and production, marketing and sales, and the book’s cultural, social, and literary impact. The award recognizes the achievements of the publisher and the author, as well all of the elements involved in getting the book into the hands of readers.

This year’s event was presented at Paul O’Regan Hall (Halifax Central Library), where the winners of eight Atlantic Book Awards were announced at an in-person event hosted by CTV’s Lataevia Beezer, with a livestream to reach book lovers who preferred to watch the ceremony online.

Morgan Murray, the author of last year’s Best Atlantic-Published Book Award winner Dirty Birds (Breakwater Books), presented the award via video. Here’s what the jury had to say about Future Possible:

How can one not be seduced by the spectacular expedition through the visual arts of Newfoundland and Labrador that Future Possible  proposes? This work of exceptional graphic quality reveals a rich and astonishing artistic panorama of this territory, so vast and so diverse in its communities. One hundred and eighty reproductions of works and installations are magnificently highlighted and the multiplicity of points of view provided by the texts contributes to the constitution of a fascinating kaleidoscopic reading of this precious history of visual arts. The fruitful collaboration between Goose Lane Editions and The Rooms Art Gallery has obviously propelled the marketing of this book which has found its audience very well.

Future Possible was chosen as the winner from a shortlist of 3 books:

·         Breakwater Books, My Indian by Saqamaw Mi’sel Joe & Sheila O’Neill

·         Goose Lane Editions, Alexa! Changing the Face of Canadian Politics by Stephen Kimber

·         Goose Lane Editions with The Rooms Corporation, Future Possible: An Art History of Newfoundland and Labrador by Mireille Eagan

Please see the Atlantic Book Awards press release for the full list of the winners announced at the Atlantic Book Awards Gala.

Atlantic Books Today Managing Editor Chris Benjamin’s short interview with Mireille Eagan about the nomination is hosted on the Atlantic Books YouTube channel:
